Futon Size / Futon Mattress Size Guide

In this article we will review the futon size and proper matching futon mattress size for the common futon frames. Futons are usually made of two main parts: the arms with one arm on each side of the futon, and futon body that varies in the size and can be paired with the associated arms. The common futon sizes are: futon chair, futon twin chair, twin lounger, futon loveseat, loveseat lounger, full size futon, and queen size futon. All these futon sizes and futon mattress sizes are explained in detail.

Futons are much like sofa beds but not exactly. Both provide seating platform and an extra bedding surface. These are very useful furniture for small spaces or when you use your living room as your bedroom. Depending on the quality of the futon mattress and considering the variety of futon mattress sizes that are available, you may experience a better sleep on a futon.

Chair Futon Size, Chair Ottoman Size, and Chair Futon Mattress Size

The futon chair commonly has a bi-fold frame with three standard positions: sofa position as you can see on the left side of Figure 1, the bed position where the back deck and seating deck lay flat parallel to the ground, and lounge position where the back deck tilt a bit towards back somewhere between sofa and bed positions. This is great accent furniture for your living room and you can make a complete living room set by adding a matching full size futon. The futon size (bedding surface) when in bed position is about L55″ × W29″, for which you can use a chair mattress with L54″ × W28″ as the common futon mattress size. The 54″ length does not give you enough room for sleeping. In order to remove this limitation you can use an ottoman with the same width as for the chair. Dimensions of an ottoman mattress are L21″ × W28″. This 21″ extra length adds to the chair futon mattress length and provides you a sleeping surface with total length of 75″ equal to the length of a full size mattress. However, you should consider that the width of the sleeping surface is relatively small.

Twin Chair Futon Size, Twin Chair Ottoman Size, and Twin Chair Futon Mattress Size

The twin chair futon has a bi-fold frame too. The twin chair futon size (bedding surface) when in bed position is about L55″ × W40″. Similar to the futon chair and chair ottoman, the combination of the twin chair and the twin chair ottoman can give you a total sleeping length of 75″, but obviously with a wider sleeping surface. The twin chair futon mattress size and the twin chair ottoman mattress size are L54″ × W39″ and L21″ × W39″, respectively. Therefore when the futon twin chair is in bed position and you use a twin chair ottoman, you will get a bedding surface equal to a twin size mattress.

Loveseat Futon Size, Loveseat Ottoman Size, and Loveseat Futon Mattress Size

Another common bi-fold frame futon is the loveseat futon. The bi-fold futon mattress size that covers a loveseat body in bed position is L54″ × W54″. As you can see both length and width of this futon mattress is equal to the width of a full size mattress. If you add a loveseat ottoman (L21″ × W54″), then the sleeping length becomes 75″. This combination results in a bedding surface equal to a full mattress size.

Twin Lounger Futon Size and Loveseat Lounger Futon Mattress Size

The twin lounger and loveseat lounger are trifold bodies with back decks, seating decks, and extra extension decks. The top left and bottom left parts of Figure 2 show the lounger in bed position. The twin lounger futon size (bedding surface) is about L76″ × W39″ and it is L76″ × W54″ for the loveseat lounger futon size. Therefor as for the futon mattress sizes you can use a twin / single futon mattress and a full size futon mattress for twin lounger and loveseat lounger, respectively. You can also put the futon in lounger position (Figure 2 - Middle Right) by sliding out the extension deck and use the legs as the support while the back deck is in sofa position. The steamer position (Figure 2 - Bottom Center) is obtained when the extension deck drops to the floor. For both lounger position and steamer position you can still use a twin size futon mattress for the twin lounger and a full futon mattress for the loveseat lounger. In some cases the extension deck is removable and hooks on and off the lounger easily. You can also slide back the extension deck into the seating deck and make a normal loveseat or twin size futon (Figure 2 - Top Right). And finally, you can tilt the back deck to the reclining position like in almost all futons. A loveseat lounger takes less space than a full size futon (see below) while provides enough space for two people to seat close to each other.

Please note that when the lounger is in sofa position, you need to hang the extra part of the mattress over the back deck or fold it underneath the seating deck. Therefore, it is wise to use thinner futon mattresses to properly hang the mattress over the back deck or fold it underneath the seating deck. If you are going to use your futon as a sofa most of the times, then you may want to consider split mattresses with higher quality and thickness for loveseat loungers. In this case you can use a L54″ × W54″ futon mattress (as the standard loveseat futon mattress size) to cover the back deck and seating deck and an ottoman mattress with dimensions of L21″ × W54″ to cover the extension deck. Generally, a bed mattress should be more durable and thicker (pocket coil spring mattress, foam mattress) while a sofa mattress should be more flexible and thinner (cotton mattress with cotton or polyester filling). When futon is mostly used as a bed, consider futon mattresses with minimum thickness of 7 inches and stay away from buying cheap mattresses in all cases.

Full and Queen Futon Sizes, and Full and Queen Futon Mattress Sizes

These are usually made with a bi-fold frame construction. The full futon size and the queen futon size (bedding surface when in bed position) are about L55″ × W76″ and L60″ × W80″, respectively. Unlike in a loveseat lounger for which the width of a full mattress is equal to the width of the lounger, for full (Figure 1. - Right) and queen futons the mattress is folded along the mattress length and the bedding length is perpendicular to the futon arms. You do not need an ottoman or extension deck as these futons give the required surfaces for a full futon mattress size or a queen futon mattress size.
